And Now We Have A Book Club!

by Savannah Lewis, Library Director

After I posted just the other day about the availability of interlibrary loans for book club quantities of a title, it turned out that there were enough Seldovians interested that yes, we’re actually going to be starting up a book club.

I am pleased to announce that the Seldovia Public Library and the Seldovia Village Tribe Prevention Program are jointly sponsoring a book club for adults. The first title planned is Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain and initial plans are to meet on Thursdays at 7 pm in the library once books have been received.

Jenifer Dickson of SVT is the organizing contact for signups and more specific scheduling information: jdickson@svt.org or 234-7898. Signups will be limited by the number of copies of the books available, so don’t wait too long if you’re interested.

Thank You, We’re Dazzled!

A thank-you note to the library’s anonymous benefactor(s)

We are speechless with surprise and gratitude to have been the recipient over the past month of 83 new books. They were purchased from our Amazon wishlist and so represent books we were especially anxious to obtain for our collection.

Dear donor(s), even though you remain anonymous, please know that the board and library volunteers join me in thanking you for your generosity on behalf of our patrons who will receive so much pleasure from these books. We operate on a very small annual budget, and gifts such as these greatly expand our ability to offer new and enticing titles.

So, thank you. We’re dazzled.

Getting Ready For Tax Season

by Savannah Lewis, Library Director – Seldovia Public Library

It’s about that time of year, again, for us to post our tax resources tips. We did that last year, and what we wrote then is still accurate.

But to make it a little more convenient for you to use this information at the library, we’ve also included a link to these same resources on the link directory page that automatically opens when you use the internet on our public library computers (just look under “Government”).

As always, we don’t provide forms here at the library. You’re always welcome to print out what you need from the IRS website (that’s one of the links), but we do charge 10 cents a page for all pages printed. Yes, we agree that this sort of adds insult to injury, but it’s simply not possible for our very limited budget to provide printer ink ($150 a cartridge!) and paper for free.

From September to November this fall, Seldovians Hig, Erin, Katmai and Lituya spent two months living on the shifting, melting surface of North America’s largest glacier.

Trekking between a series of camps on the Malaspina Glacier, on Alaska’s remote and harsh Lost Coast, they explored this dramatic and wild landscape, weathered the fall storms, and documented climate change in action. You can read more about their expedition in their Life on Ice blog entries.

Now that they’re home and have had time to sort through their photographs and videos, they’re ready to share this adventure with the community. Please join us Saturday evening, Dec. 3 at 6:30 pm in the Susan B. English School Commons for a multimedia lecture on their trip.

This event is sponsored by the Seldovia Public Library in cooperation withGround Truth Trekking. There is no charge for admission.
