The second annual Summer Lecture Series co-sponsored by Seldovians for Science and the Seldovia Public Library has finished another successful season. We hope to continue to bring in scholars from a variety of disciplines to share their research and interests with us here in Seldovia.Last summer, we addressed the Big Bang, the age of the Earth, and Evolution. This summer we continued with the theme of directly addressing science denial.

In July, Ed Berg, retired Ecologist at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and instructor at Kenai Peninsula College talked about the effects of climate change Continue reading

Our Seldovia Library Needs Your Help!

by Tracie Merrill

With the end of summer approaching, we are really in need of volunteers these days.

Under our grant terms, we must keep the library open a certain number of hours a week.  Our current schedule does that; if we slash our hours, not so much. So, we don’t have a lot of wiggle room.

And there’s the whole thing about being open enough that we cover the times when you want to use the library. We need our schedule to be handy for folks who are out and about during the day, kids who need to be able to use the library when they’re not in school, and working folks who can only run errands at night or on the weekend.

Can you help us out? We need folks who can give us just a couple hours in an afternoon, once a week. Or even every other week. You’ll get all of the (very simple) training you’ll need. It’s not hard and it’s not terribly time-consuming but it’s all-important in keeping our library operating. We really need your support.

If interested, please contact Tracie Merrill either by stopping in, emailing traciemerrill@hotmail.com, or calling 907-750-2918 and letting us know that you can share a little of your time with the rest of Seldovia’s library community. It will mean so much to all of us. Thank you.

Sweeney Book Signing

by Seldovia Public Library

Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 7:30 pm
At the Seldovia Library

Alaskan author James Sweeney will join us for a book reading and signing (copies will be available at the event for purchase). There is no charge to attend.

About Jamestaken from James’ website

A cold north wind blows down from the arctic but otherwise it is sunny and beautiful out and James P. Sweeney would rather do anything than write a bio, but if you need to read something about him here you go.

Over the last seven years Jim has had stories published in the Anchorage Press, The Anchorage Daily News, Alpinist Magazine, Alaska Dispatch and Cirque Literary Journal to name a few. He’s read his stories on KSKA, KZFR, and KEUL Public Radio stations. Jim also starred in Alaska Avalanche, the finale of Discovery Channel’s hit series, I Shouldn’t be Alive.

Jim was forty eight when he wrote The List. The year was 2004 and the Anchorage Press published the story the following week. Jim was crippled from an old mountain climbing fall and his handicap almost forced him to become a serious hard working writer. His fall, injury and ensuing epic of survival are Alaskan legend and the motivating force behind his drive as a writer. James P. Sweeney has many stories to tell.
